On CNN on Thursday, CNN senior political commentator Scott Jennings predicted that Republicans will have the advantage in this election cycle after a Manhattan jury found former President Donald Trump guilty on 34 charges.
A former Bush administration official said the ruling would have a “huge backfire” on Democrats by galvanizing Republican support and encouraging fundraising.
“If my phone and the text messages I’m receiving are any indication, every Republican in this country is a big deal,” he said. “So there are people out there who are obviously not MAGA, who are not Trump supporters who are outraged tonight that this case should never have been filed, that this is a ridiculous charge, that this is a terrible use of the criminal justice system. And then there are people who are saying they never intended to vote for Donald Trump, and now they are. So you ask the Trump campaign, what’s going on?”
“You know, they literally took down their online donation portals as people rushed to the internet trying to save money minutes after the verdict,” Jennings added. “So I think this could really backfire on the Democrats and help Donald Trump.”
