In an interview on CNN after Wednesday's Republican presidential debate, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, a 2024 Republican presidential candidate, said his opponent, former President Donald Trump, was “overseeing the BLM riots.” He did nothing to stop the riots. He gave no federal aid. He” and failed to utilize the National Guard to maintain order.
“I hit him,” DeSantis said. “Obviously he should have been on that stage and we would have been more confused, but they talked about his quote.[ation] About using the Insurrection Act to advance into cities. He was monitoring the BLM riots. He did nothing to stop the riots. He gave no federal aid. So we put that responsibility on him. We held him accountable for not building a wall, not deporting people, and other broken promises. But if someone wants to come on stage, it's easier. And I think the reason he doesn't go on stage is because he knows there are vulnerabilities in his record. ”
DeSantis then added: “Certainly he had the right to invoke the Insurrection Act. That's one of the whole reasons the Constitution was written, because they were afraid of mob violence. And by the way, it hasn't recovered. It's probably going to take decades to recover. He could have gone in and brought in the National Guard and federalized the Guard to maintain order. It should be.”
