Trump-Harris debate live: presidential nominees to face off in high-stakes showdown | US elections 2024

Harris and Trump to hold debate as polls show tight race in presidential election

Good evening, readers of the US Politics Blog, and thank you for joining us for tonight's debate. Kamala Harris and Donald TrumpIn what is expected to be a milestone in an already historic presidential election, the two candidates will face off for 90 minutes at the National Constitution Center in Philadelphia, hosted by ABC News and anchored by David Muir and Lindsay Davisa moderate. The Democratic and Republican candidates are facing off against each other, but opinion polls predict a close race, especially in the seven battleground states that are expected to determine the winner.

This will be Harris' first debate with Trump since becoming the Democratic Party's standard-bearer. Joe Biden Harris and Trump faced off in June, but the president performed so poorly that his approval ratings plummeted and he faced a Democratic lobbying campaign, leading to his decision to abandon his bid for a second term. Harris has served as vice president since 2021, but has only given one formal interview since launching her presidential campaign, and polls show voters want to know more about her plans if elected. This debate could be Harris' chance to do just that. Meanwhile, it could be Trump's chance to make his case for a return to the White House.

Here are some things we note:

  • Both candidates Can Biden land a knockout punch? Biden certainly did land one when he faced off against Trump a couple of months ago, but he's not the only candidate to have ended a debate with his campaign hanging by a thread.

  • Trump Did he make an insensitive remark about Harris' racial identity? Just days into his campaign, the former president sparked outrage by claiming that the vice president is not really black.

  • What would Harris say? What do you think about her policies? She took over the campaign from Biden and has gradually deviated from some of his proposals. Watch what she says about U.S. support for Israel and her past stance on immigration, a topic Trump always brings up.

Good evening, US politics blog readers, and thanks for joining us as we cover tonight’s debate between Kamala Harris and Donald Trump, which we expect to be a milestone in what has already been a historically tumultuous presidential race. The two contenders are set to square off for 90 minutes at the National Constitution Center in Philadelphia, with ABC News hosting and their anchors, David Muir and Linsey Davis, moderating. The Democratic and Republican candidates are meeting as polls indicate a neck-in-neck race between them, particularly in the seven swing states expected to decide the winner.

This will be Harris’s first debate against Trump since she became the Democratic standard bearer. Joe Biden and Trump faced off in June, but the president put in such a poor showing that it sparked a plunge in his poll numbers and a Democratic pressure campaign that contributed to his decision to end his bid for a second term. Though Harris has been vice-president since 2021, she has done only one formal interview since launching her presidential campaign, and polls have indicated that voters are looking to find out more about her plans, if elected. This debate could present her with the opportunity to do that – while, for Trump, he’ll be given the chance to make the case for his return to the White House.

What will Harris say about her policies? She inherited a campaign from Biden, but has slowly deviated from some of his proposals. Look out for anything she has to say about US support to Israel, and her previous stances toward immigration – a subject Trump is sure to bring up.

More from Olivia Troy, former homeland security and counterterrorism adviser to Mike Pence, who served as vice president under President Donald Trump.

She was holding a press conference on behalf of the Harris campaign ahead of the debate and was asked whether she feared retaliation from the former president because of her strong opposition to Harris.

Troye highlighted a social media post Trump made on Saturday threatening to jail “corrupt” election officials if he won. “Anyone who engages in immoral conduct will be sought out, arrested and prosecuted at a level sadly never seen before in our country,” he wrote.

Troye told reporters in Philadelphia: “Just this weekend, he threatened to send election workers to jail. He actually wanted the police to come after them. Think about it. Take a step back and think about what that means for our elections now that we have a former president of the United States again running for office and claiming attacks on election workers.”

She added, “By the way, they've already suffered threats, especially in Georgia, and there have been threats made against Governor Kemp, who simply stayed the course, told the truth and supported the 2020 election, which was a free and fair election.”

“When someone makes a statement like that, I think there will certainly be retaliation. I have no doubt there will be retaliation against me and others who are just not aligned with the kind of cult he is.”

A group of young voters criticized the Republican National Committee's Gun Store Debate Viewing Party, calling the Trump campaign “evil” and the former president “out of touch with reality” for holding the event so close to the debate date. Filming location.

Groups including Tomorrow's Voters, College Democrats of America, Leaders We Dither, College Democrats of Georgia, Georgia High School Democrats, Georgia Young Democrats, Paths to Progress and Blue Future issued a joint statement condemning the Republican National Committee's decision.

Just days after students and teachers were killed at Apalachee High School, Republicans are hosting a debate viewing party an hour away at the world's largest gun store. The Trump campaign's dismissal of the victims and its continued refusal to support life-saving gun violence prevention policies is evil.

“Donald Trump is out of touch with the majority of Americans when it comes to preventing gun violence. As today's events show, he continues to kowtow to the gun lobby and demean victims. As young activists in Georgia and across the country, and as part of a generation defined by mass shootings, we know that Donald Trump's disregard for the lives of young Americans will be his downfall in this election.”
