A new poll shows former President Trump and Vice President Harris are tied in key battleground states. CBS News Poll The announcement came Sunday as Democrats endorsed Harris as their new official candidate.
The CBS News/YouGov poll also found Harris leading Trump nationally by one point, a much better situation for Democrats than if President Biden were to come out on top.
Polls show the two candidates tied 50-50 in battleground states, but Harris leads Trump 50-49% in head-to-head races nationwide, and when third-party candidates are included, Harris has a 2-point lead over Trump.
Ms. Harris’ campaign has stoked mass enthusiasm among Democrats since replacing Mr. Biden, breaking fundraising records and drawing huge crowds. That enthusiasm has been reflected in polls, with more Democrats saying they would “definitely” vote for her than if Biden were the nominee.
Overall, 85% of Democrats and 88% of Republicans say they will vote, compared with 81% of Democrats and 90% of Republicans last month.
Among black voters, a key demographic for Harris, 74% said they would “definitely” vote, up from 58% when Biden was the candidate.
Harris currently has 81% support among Black voters, compared with Biden’s 73%, and Democratic strategists have been warning for months that Biden was losing support with this key segment of the party’s base.
The gender gap between the candidates also widened, with Vice President Harris winning 54 percent of the female vote, while the poll showed Trump winning 54 percent of the male vote.
In the battleground states, Harris and Trump are tied in Michigan, Pennsylvania and Arizona, while Trump has a one-point lead in Wisconsin and three-point leads in Georgia and North Carolina, while Harris has a two-point lead in Nevada, according to the poll.
The CBS News/YouGov poll was conducted among about 3,100 registered voters between July 30 and Aug. 2 and has a margin of error of 2.1 percentage points.
