Toyota’s Major Investment in Texas
Toyota has announced plans to invest an additional $3.6 billion into its facility in San Antonio, Texas. This expansion will effectively double the plant’s size by 2030 and create 2,000 new jobs in the area.
Reportedly, the manufacturing of Toyota Tacoma pickup trucks will be transferred from the Mexico plant in Tijuana to the Texas location over the next four years.
President Donald Trump praised this move as a significant outcome of tariffs. He remarked that it signifies Toyota’s shift from Mexico to the United States, noting it as a historical event for truck and passenger car manufacturing.
“Toyota is coming from Mexico to the United States and building the largest truck and passenger car factory ever built,” Trump stated during a meeting with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
He reiterated this sentiment on social media, calling it a “really big deal” and emphasizing the effectiveness of the tariffs.
Since 2003, Toyota has invested a total of $8.3 billion in its San Antonio operations and aims to assemble around 200,000 vehicles by 2025.
Texas Governor Greg Abbott expressed that this significant investment illustrates Texas’s growth, further enhancing its position in the automotive industry.
Senator Ted Cruz also remarked that this decision reinforces Texas as a leader in innovation and investment, celebrating the positive environment for business with lower taxes and fewer obstacles to job creation.
“Texas leads the nation because we believe in free enterprise, low taxes, and fewer government barriers to job creation,” Cruz noted in a post.
Toyota reaffirmed its commitment to its North American operations, aligning with the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA). However, USMCA is set to undergo a lengthy annual review process now that it hasn’t been extended as of earlier this month.
“Toyota remains fully committed to expanding its operations throughout the United States, Canada, and Mexico, and encourages a swift resolution of the USMCA,” the company stated.
Ted Ogawa, the CEO of Toyota Motor North America, highlighted this expansion as a testament to the company’s dedication to U.S. manufacturing.
“By expanding our San Antonio facility, we deepen our commitment to American manufacturing, create meaningful and sustainable jobs, and advance our mission to provide quality vehicles,” Ogawa commented.
The White House shared the news of Toyota’s decision to move production, indicating it would bring significant job opportunities to the U.S.
