Texas GOP Celebrates New Congressional Map Approval

Late Wednesday, President Trump expressed enthusiasm over what he termed a “massive Texas victory” after the state’s legislature approved a new congressional map, following a protracted debate.

In a post, he stated, “Everything has passed, five more seats, on the way to save your rights, freedom, and your country itself.” He also remarked, “Texas will never disappoint us.”

The Texas Republican majority voted 88-52, allowing the new district lines to progress to the lower Chamber of Commerce, which could yield five additional seats for the GOP next year. Next, it will go to the state senators for their approval.

Democrats in Texas attempted to block the vote by leaving the state for over two weeks to break the quorum. After threats of arrests and fines, some returned to the state. Reports indicate that Democrats were later confined to their rooms unless accompanied by police escorts.

One lawmaker, Nicole Collier (D), notably evaded detection for days to draw attention to the restrictions placed on her colleagues by Texas Senator Dustin Burrows (R).

This rezoning dispute in Texas mirrors similar efforts being undertaken in other GOP-led states. Democratic-led states such as California, New York, and Illinois are also proposing their own measures.

Trump noted that states like Florida and Indiana are pursuing parallel initiatives, asserting that this will lead to “more seats, fewer crimes, a stronger economy, and a more powerful Second Amendment,” claiming this brings “happiness and peace.”

In response, California Governor Gavin Newsom and New York Governor Kathy Hochul criticized Texas Republicans, alleging that the new map unfairly advantage the GOP. Hochul described it as the “last gasp of a hopeless party that clings to power.” Newsom echoed similar sentiments, suggesting that Republicans are changing the rules because they feel threatened.
