Trump holds a White House discussion on the Rural Health Transformation Program

Trump Launches Rural Health Transformation Initiatives

On January 16, 2026, President Donald Trump convened a roundtable in the White House East Room, centered on revitalizing medical services in rural communities. This event specifically highlighted the Rural Health Transformation Program.

The roundtable aimed to announce an immediate allocation of $10 billion to states, initiating the first phase of a broader $50 billion commitment through the Working Families Tax Cuts Act, slated for 2026-2030.

This program, overseen by the newly established Office of Rural Health Transformation, seeks to enhance healthcare in underserved areas through four main strategies:

  • Modernizing Infrastructure: Upgrading hospitals and clinics in rural regions to ensure high-quality care is accessible, regardless of location.
  • Technological Leadership: Expanding AI-driven medical services, including AI scribes and advanced telehealth options to minimize the specialist gap in remote locations.
  • Preventative “Whole-of-Health” Care: Launching food-as-medicine initiatives and nationwide nutrition education to tackle chronic health issues.
  • Youth Fitness Restoration: Bringing back the Presidential Fitness Test in schools to encourage physical fitness among youth.

In attendance were Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins, and CMS Administrator Dr. Mehmet Oz, all expressing support for Trump’s commitment to rural America.

Trump emphasized the need for federal backing to help communities upgrade infrastructure and advance healthcare technology, noting his ongoing efforts to lower prescription drug prices as a key aspect of making healthcare more affordable.

“This historic investment puts local hospitals, clinics, and health workers in control of their communities’ healthcare,” stated HHS Secretary Kennedy, praising the initiative. “Thanks to President Trump’s leadership, rural Americans will now have affordable healthcare close to home.”

Earlier, on January 7, Kennedy and Rollins introduced the Dietary Guidelines for Americans (2025-2030), which focus on real foods, increased protein and dairy, and decreased processed sugars. This complements the Rural Health Transformation Program by integrating nutrition into healthcare strategies addressing chronic illness in rural settings.

Through the Working Families Tax Cuts legislation, significant resources are set to improve rural healthcare across the United States. All states have applied for the program, with many local governments quickly enacting laws to secure their share of the initial $10 billion.

Dr. Oz highlighted the administration’s successful negotiations, which led to a 70% reduction in the costs of common IVF and fertility treatments. He predicted that these price decreases could boost family growth, referring somewhat humorously to a potential spike in “Trump babies” by the upcoming midterm elections.

However, some congressional Democrats, referencing analysis from KFF, argue that the $50 billion funding only offsets a fraction of the projected losses in Medicaid revenue for rural providers, raising concerns about financial stability for various hospitals.

In reply, the Trump administration asserts that the fund promotes accountability, with Dr. Oz explaining that the federal government can reassess funding if states do not keep up with necessary policy changes or meet health improvement targets.

This initiative marks a significant step in addressing the healthcare needs of rural populations and fostering overall health improvements in the United States.
