Trump holds slight lead over Biden in Georgia survey

Former President Trump holds a five-point lead over President Biden in the battleground state of Georgia, and the two candidates are scheduled to face off in a debate in the state’s capital this week. New Research.

According to a poll released Tuesday by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution (AJC), Trump has 43 percent support in the Peach State, compared to Biden’s 38 percent.

According to the survey, independent candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr., who is not yet on the state’s electoral rolls, received the support of 9 percent, while 8 percent said they were undecided.

Georgia became a pivotal battleground state in 2020 after Biden flipped the state to the Democrats for the first time in decades, defeating Trump by fewer than 12,000 votes. The president’s victory was the closest of the last election cycle and the first time a Democrat won the state’s electoral votes since former President Clinton in 1992.

But the 2024 race has so far shown no signs of the kind of massive turnout that buoyed Biden’s lead four years ago, with Decision Desk HQ projecting Trump has a 63% chance of winning Georgia.

The AJC poll also found that support for Biden has dwindled among younger voters, with about 12% of Georgia residents ages 18 to 29 saying they would vote for him. The AJC noted that previous polls had found Biden’s support “significantly higher” among younger voters.

Biden and Trump will head to Atlanta this Thursday for the first presidential debate since 2020. The debate will be hosted by CNN and moderated by Jake Tapper and Dana Bash, and will begin at 9 p.m.

The AJC poll was conducted by the University of Georgia’s School of Public and International Affairs from June 11 to 22 and surveyed 1,000 voters. The poll has a margin of error of 3.1 percentage points.
