Trump Celebrates Columbus Day with Tribute

For quite some time, President Trump has advocated for Christopher Columbus to be reinstated as a respected historical figure in American history. His recent remarks, just days ahead of Columbus Day, served as a bold statement against critics of America’s past.

On Friday, Trump organized a celebration honoring Columbus at the White House, aiming to restore the legacy of the 15th-century Italian explorer, a figure some believe has been harshly criticized by progressive commentators in recent years.

Trump, a long-time supporter of Columbus, previously called for the nation to “BRING BACK COLUMBUS DAY” four years ago. Just last April, he took to social media to declare his intention to revive the holiday, insisting that efforts to undermine Columbus—including removing his statues—were driven by his political opponents.

In his speech, Trump reiterated his commitment to reinstating Columbus as a hero. “Christopher Columbus changed the future of humanity forever. And in this administration, we know that Christopher Columbus is — to us, he’s a hero. He’s a hero,” he stated.

He went on to recount the story of a Columbus statue made from “the finest Italian marble,” which had been situated in Baltimore’s Little Italy but was destroyed by activists in July 2020. Trump described how a mob, whom he labeled as “radical left lunatics and Marxists,” had vandalized the statue and discarded its remains into the harbor.

“They want to tear down the history and heritage that makes us who we are, not only Columbus,” Trump emphasized during his address.

Fortunately, the broken pieces were salvaged by members of the Italian-American community, leading to a restoration of the statue, which was later placed outside the Eisenhower Executive Office Building by Trump as a gesture towards the Italian American Community.

During the event, Trump hinted at a surprise and introduced Brett Rugo, who gifted the White House with a unique 19th-century statue of Columbus from Italy. Although Trump had yet to see it, the crowd responded positively when he asked for their thoughts on the statue.

He shared future plans for the statue, stating, “We’re going to be bringing Brett’s [statue] over to the Rose Garden, and we’re going to place it in a very special place of honor.”

“While I’m president of the United States, we’ll always honor and celebrate the immortal legends,” he concluded.
