Trump Honors Late Congressman Doug LaMalfa

On Tuesday, President Trump spoke about the late Rep. Doug LaMalfa (R-Calif.) during a gathering of Republican lawmakers, following the congressman’s unexpected passing that morning.

Initially, Trump had thought about canceling his speech at the Trump Kennedy Center after hearing the news about LaMalfa. However, he ultimately decided it was important to pay tribute. He acknowledged LaMalfa’s unwavering support in the polls, expressing gratitude that he never had to actively seek LaMalfa’s backing.

“I talked to Doug, but I didn’t talk to him, right? We had no problems,” Trump remarked. “I felt really saddened by his death and almost didn’t give a speech. But I thought I had to do it in his honor—I’m sure that’s what he would have wanted.”

He added, “He would say, ‘Give me that speech! Are you kidding? Give me that speech.’ He was a wonderful person. It’s shocking. I still don’t fully understand what happened, but he was tough, and he was our friend.”

LaMalfa passed away at the age of 65, though the exact circumstances surrounding his death remain unclear. House Majority Whip Tom Emmer (R-Minnesota) confirmed the news on social media.

“Jackie and I are devastated by the sudden loss of Congressman Doug LaMalfa. Doug was a devoted father, husband, and a strong advocate for his constituents and rural America. Our thoughts and prayers are with his wife Jill and their children,” Emmer stated.

Known for championing conservative ideals, LaMalfa was also regarded as a kind figure towards both reporters and fellow lawmakers. He represented California’s 1st Congressional District and led the Congressional Western Caucus.

With LaMalfa’s death, the Republican majority in the House is now reduced to 218-213, which means the party can only afford to lose two votes for legislation to pass along party lines.
