Trump honors Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene's departure from Congress

Former President Trump lauded Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene’s unexpected announcement of her resignation as “great news” for the nation.

During a short phone conversation with ABC News, Trump expressed his enthusiasm, stating, “I think it’s great news for the country.” He also remarked, “It’s amazing.”

Trump mentioned that Greene, a Republican from Georgia, hadn’t informed him about her decision prior to her social media post indicating she would leave her position on January 5, 2026. He noted that he had no intention of discussing the matter with her.

He clarified, “No, that’s not the point, you know? But I think it’s great. I think she should be happy.”

Greene, one of Trump’s staunch supporters, had recently drawn his discontent after voicing criticisms regarding the administration’s management of documents related to convicted pedophile Jeffrey Epstein, as well as differing on several policy matters.

Trump had removed his support for Greene the previous week, stating she faced significant challenges leading up to the 2026 midterm elections, and revealed plans to back her opponent.

In her resignation letter, Greene articulated, “I have too much self-respect and dignity, and I love my family too much, and I do not want my district to endure a hurtful, hate-filled primary against me by the president we all fought for, only to win my election while the Republican Party is likely to lose in the midterm elections.”

She added, “It’s all so ridiculous and completely disingenuous. I refuse to be a ‘battered wife’. I hope everything goes away and gets better.”

Her departure will further shrink the slim Republican majority in the House, which consists of 219 Republicans and 213 Democrats.

House Speaker Mike Johnson, who Greene had attempted to challenge last year, was reportedly unaware of her resignation until it was announced, according to a source familiar with the situation.

A House Republican aide characterized Greene’s decision to step down as a “vengeful” action, meant to undermine the majority.

Neither the White House nor Speaker Johnson’s office immediately responded to inquiries regarding the matter.
