Trump Optimistic About Russia-Ukraine Peace Talks
President Donald Trump expressed a cautiously optimistic view on the peace negotiations between Russia and Ukraine during a post on Truth Social, following a recent meeting in Geneva with his delegation and Ukrainian officials.
In his post, Trump questioned the likelihood of significant advances, stating, “Is it really possible that there will be significant progress in peace talks between Russia and Ukraine? Don’t believe it until you see it. But something good may come. God bless America!”
The White House described Sunday’s discussions, which involved Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Special Envoy Steve Witkoff, Army Secretary Daniel Driscoll, Jared Kushner, and the Ukrainian team, as “productive” and indicative of “significant progress.”
The Ukrainian representatives noted that crucial issues, including security and political sovereignty, were comprehensively discussed during the meeting. They acknowledged the organized approach to incorporating feedback into a new payments framework.
A Ukrainian official expressed optimism, stating that recent amendments made to the draft reflect national interests, aiming to create an effective mechanism for Ukraine’s short- and long-term security. The involved leaders highlighted the importance of a robust security structure, as well as commitments to non-aggression and energy security, to address critical strategic needs.
Secretary Rubio and his colleagues reinforced the United States’ commitment to upholding Ukraine’s sovereignty and stability during ongoing diplomatic efforts. They emphasized that this initiative aligns with Trump’s objective to end conflicts that have resulted in extensive loss of life and to prevent further casualties through a lasting peace. Both sides expressed satisfaction with the progress and agreed to continue discussions as they refine the agreement.
A joint statement released shortly after the meeting confirmed their intention to draft a “modern and sophisticated peace framework.” It said that Ukraine and the United States would maintain intensive collaboration on the proposal in the following days while staying in close communication with European partners throughout the process.
