Trump: ‘I am labeling ANTIFA as a significant terrorist group’

Trump Proposes Designating ANTIFA as a Terrorist Organization

Former President Donald Trump has announced plans to classify the far-left group ANTIFA as a terrorist organization.

On Truth Social, Trump expressed, “I am pleased to inform many American patriots that we have designated Antifa, a disease-risk, dangerous, radically dead disaster, as the leading terrorist organization.”

While ANTIFA stands for “anti-fascist,” its tactics are often viewed as reminiscent of fascism itself. The group adopted its name and some of its violent behaviors from the militant Antifaschistische Aktion of the German Communist Party during the 1930s.

Trump also urged for those funding ANTIFA to be investigated rigorously, adhering to the highest legal standards.

This isn’t the first time Trump has voiced such concerns. He made similar remarks in May 2020, especially as ANTIFA became prominent during the Black Lives Matter protests following George Floyd’s death. There were reports of masked members attacking conservatives and police, and causing significant damage during the summer protests.

The announcement arrives shortly after the tragic murder of conservative activist Charlie Kirk, allegedly shot by Tyler Robinson. The gun used supposedly had casings with anti-fascist and LGBT+ messages, with one notably stating, “Fascist! Catch!”

Andy Ngo, who has studied ANTIFA extensively and authored “Unmasked: Inside Antifa’s Radical Plan of Democracy,” has previously reported on interactions with the group. He endured an attack in Portland in 2019, for which he won a lawsuit in 2023, following an incident where he was assaulted and suffered serious injuries.

In light of Trump’s recent statement, Ngo warned about potential leftist propaganda regarding ANTIFA.

“About Antifa for the next few days, anticipate propaganda in many liberal and left-wing media. They will argue that the movement is disorganized and that those involved are merely peaceful racial justice activists opposing fascism,” Ngo shared on X.

It’s an ongoing conversation, and as the discourse evolves, the complexities involved will likely draw both support and opposition from various sides.
