Trump Files Defamation Lawsuit Against New York Times
President Donald Trump has initiated a $15 billion defamation lawsuit against the New York Times, alleging that the newspaper is attempting to damage his character and undermine his 2024 presidential campaign with “actual malicious intent.”
In his complaint, he describes the publication as a “complete mouthpiece” for Democrats, contending that it has printed numerous false articles about him in support of former Vice President Kamala Harris’s electoral efforts. Trump’s legal team asserts that the articles and books authored by certain reporters were deliberately crafted to harm his candidacy and reputation.
The lawsuit claims, “Whatever the historical merits of this self-congratulation, the Times has betrayed the journalistic principles of integrity, objectivity, and accuracy it once championed.” It continues, stating, “Today, the Times is essentially a Democrat mouthpiece. Its editorial stance represents a significant and detrimental shift in journalistic integrity.”
The defendants named include Suzanne Craig, Russ Boettner, Peter Baker, and Michael S. Schmidt, along with the New York Times itself. The book cited in the lawsuit, “Lucky Loser: How Donald Trump Wasted His Father’s Wealth and Created an Illusion of Success,” was authored by Craig and Boettner.
Trump expressed, through his social media platform, that filing this lawsuit is an “honor.” He criticized the Times for its support of Harris, emphasizing that it has had a prominent place on the newspaper’s front page.
The lawsuit alleges that the book inaccurately portrays Trump as having been discovered by “The Apprentice” executive producer Mark Burnett, perceiving it as a deliberate attempt to belittle his success.
The suit also references a September 2024 editorial from the Times which stated that Trump would undermine democratic norms and erode the foundations that have strengthened the country. It condemned several articles published around the same time, claiming they unjustly painted Trump as a dictator, labeling their content as malicious and defamatory.
Trump’s lawsuit accuses the Times and its writers of “falsifying, distorting, and manipulating facts” with the intent to defame him.
A spokesperson for the Times remarked that the lawsuit has “no legitimate claims” and is merely an effort to intimidate the newspaper. They asserted, “There is no merit to this lawsuit. It lacks basis in law and seeks to obstruct independent journalism. The New York Times will not be deterred by such tactics; we will continue to report facts fearlessly and uphold journalistic integrity.”
The legal landscape surrounding Trump has been active, with CBS and its parent, Paramount, agreeing to a $36 million settlement related to a “60 Minutes” interview with Harris. Additionally, ABC News settled for $15 million after Trump contested claims made about him by host George Stephanopoulos.
Recently, the Times had to amend a report after controversies arose involving comments made by Charlie Kirk, founder of Turning Point USA, who erroneously claimed that Jewish individuals had incited hatred against white people. His remarks drew criticism after being drawn from another individual’s tweets.
