Homeland Security Plans Expansion in Chicago and Portland
Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem mentioned on Thursday that the Trump administration is contemplating the acquisition of more facilities in Chicago and Portland. This move comes alongside a commitment to stricter enforcement of immigration laws, despite these cities being classified as sanctuaries.
Noem, during a Cabinet meeting, informed President Trump, “With your authority, we’re looking to acquire and open additional spaces in Chicago. We’re not backing down. In fact, we’re doubling our efforts in response to the concerns of Chicago residents.”
In Portland, Camilla Wamsley, who heads the ICE office, remarked about the violence experienced at ICE facilities, noting that it has persisted for over 100 nights. She echoed Noem’s sentiment, stating, “We’re also working to secure a new facility in Portland, essentially doubling down our efforts. If safety and security demands aren’t met, more federal law enforcement will respond.”
The relationship between Trump’s administration and local leaders in Chicago and Portland has been contentious, particularly regarding immigration enforcement and the deployment of the National Guard to safeguard federal interests amid rising anti-ICE protests.
Illinois Governor JB Pritzker criticized Trump, suggesting that the president is perhaps caught in a relentless cycle of outdated thinking. He added, “He seems oblivious to current events; it’s like something has lodged in his mind that influences his actions toward these cities.”
Oregon Governor Tina Kotek recently instructed U.S. Northern Command to disband 400 National Guard troops stationed in Portland to protect federal property and personnel.
Noem expressed that she found local officials to be disingenuous, stating that their reactions often contradict their public statements once they leave meetings.
She also emphasized that enhanced security measures are being implemented to protect federal buildings following incidents involving violence against ICE officers, including a recent shooting in Dallas. “We’re reinforcing all our buildings, with added safety measures like rooftop snipers and increased personnel to support law enforcement on the ground,” she stated.
