Donald Trump issued a warning to Apple regarding the manufacturing of iPhones. He stated, “I think iPhones sold in the U.S. should be made in the United States, not in India or anywhere else.” He also mentioned that Apple would face tariffs of at least 25% if they continued with overseas production.
Trump shared that he has communicated with Apple’s CEO, Tim Cook, emphasizing his expectation for iPhones in America to be produced domestically. He cautioned, “If not, you will have to pay at least 25% customs duties to the US from Apple. Be careful of this issue!”
This announcement coincides with the ongoing expansion of Foxconn, Apple’s primary supplier, into India.
Despite Trump’s objections, Foxconn, which is Taiwan’s Hon Hai Precision Industry, is reportedly investing $1.5 billion in Tamil Nadu, India. A new facility will be situated near their existing iPhone assembly unit and will focus on manufacturing display modules for Apple products.
Foxconn recently confirmed its investment and plans to inject significant funding into its subsidiary in India and has proceeded with expansion efforts in the face of Trump’s disapproval. Last week, during a trip to Qatar, Trump criticized Apple for concentrating on production in India instead of relocating it back to the U.S. He reiterated to Tim Cook the importance of bringing jobs and production home.
Trump remains steadfast in prioritizing American manufacturing.
