Trump Signs Executive Order for Supersonic Aviation

On June 6, 2025, President Donald Trump signed an Executive Order intended to revitalize the development of supersonic aviation technology in the United States.

In a statement, the White House highlighted a few key points:

• The U.S. was once a pioneer in supersonic aviation, but restrictive regulations have hindered progress. This Executive Order aims to eliminate those barriers and help U.S. companies reclaim their leadership in supersonic flight.
• It instructs the Administrator of the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to lift the ban on overland supersonic flight, create a temporary noise-based certification standard, and remove other regulations that currently impede supersonic travel.
• The FAA is also directed to create a noise certification standard for supersonic aircraft that balances community acceptance, economic viability, and technical feasibility.
• This Order seeks to enhance coordination for research, development, testing, and evaluation of supersonic technology, led by the National Science and Technology Council with support from the Office of Science and Technology Policy.
• There is a focus on international cooperation through the FAA and other agencies to harmonize regulations for global supersonic flights and establish agreements for international operations.

The President is embarking on what the White House calls a “historic national effort” to restore the U.S. as the dominant force in high-speed aviation.

• For over fifty years, outdated rules have curbed the potential of supersonic flight, stifling innovation and diminishing America’s competitive edge in aviation.

• American companies are already collaborating with major airlines such as United and American Airlines on contracts to acquire supersonic jets, aiming to enhance their fleets with faster travel options.
