President Donald Trump took a moment to recognize Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán during a campaign rally speech by Vice President J.D. Vance on Tuesday, just hours ahead of a crucial deadline for a deal with Iran.
“Mr. President, you’re with about 5,000 Hungarian patriots, and I think they might adore you even more than Viktor Orbán,” Vance remarked during a phone conversation broadcasted to an audience in Hungary.
Before the upcoming election, Trump addressed around 5,000 supporters, commending Orbán as a “great person” who has “done a great job” for Hungary.
“I love Hungary, and I love Viktor—trust me on that,” Trump expressed. “He’s a great guy. We’ve had a fantastic relationship, and he’s really fulfilling his role well. Don’t forget, he didn’t let others invade your country and wreak havoc.”
Trump noted that Hungary’s strict border security measures are helping reduce crime and asserted that Europe is experiencing a significant influx of migrants.
He mentioned, “Frankly, he’s kept your country in good shape. He’s ensured Hungarians stay in Hungary. Really, he’s done wonderfully,” adding that Orbán’s immigration policies are key to keeping Hungary “strong.” He went on to say, “Hungarians are quite similar to me.”
After Trump’s remarks, Vance urged the crowd to support Orbán in the upcoming election, particularly as independent polls suggest Orbán could face a tough fight.
Vance previously criticized the European Union for its “shameful” meddling in Hungary’s elections, emphasizing the significance Trump’s MAGA movement places on Orbán’s re-election.
In his closing comments, Trump expressed his gratitude for the crowd, saying, “You’re wonderful people full of enthusiasm and talent. I genuinely love you all. You’ve contributed to making our country stronger. Hungary doesn’t have the same issues as many other nations because they haven’t experienced invasions, thanks to Viktor Orbán.”
During his visit, Vance highlighted the moral cooperation between the U.S. and Hungary, underscoring both nations’ roles in defending Western civilization under the leadership of Trump and Orbán.
Mr. Orbán, who has been in leadership for 16 years, characterized the current state of U.S.-Hungarian relations as a “golden era” during Trump’s administration.
