Trump Critiques “Affordability” in Recent Remarks
President Donald Trump labeled the term “affordability” as a “Democrat scam,” insisting that Democrats are ill-equipped to revive the economy.
Following victories in pivotal races during the recent 2025 election, Democrats positioned themselves around the theme of affordability. In response, Republicans have been discussing their approach to what they view as an “affordability crisis,” particularly as many Americans find it challenging to make ends meet.
During a cabinet meeting, Trump addressed the affordability issue, asserting that his administration is actually lowering prices. When asked by Fox News Business White House correspondent Edward Lawrence if Americans might be impatient with recent reforms, Trump expressed skepticism about media reporting, stating, “I think they’re getting fake news from people like you. Affordability is a hoax.” He explained that Democrats are responsible for creating the problem without resolving it.
Trump emphasized the efforts to decrease costs, specifically mentioning that beef prices are declining. He reflected on inheriting “horrible prices” and the “worst inflation in history,” claiming that his administration had made significant strides in addressing these issues.
During his comments, Trump also referenced a special election in Tennessee, where Democratic candidates campaigned on affordability and economic revival. He criticized them by saying, “They’re the ones who caused the problem,” while reiterating his administration’s role in reducing prices from their artificially high levels.
In the wake of November’s Democratic wins, Deputy Chief of Staff James Blair indicated to Politico that Republicans would need to pivot their messaging toward affordability as they head into the midterm elections, mirroring the Democrats’ strategy.
Trump remarked that the administration recognizes the gradual nature of the economic turnaround, although he believes the foundational elements are promising. He also reflected on the Democratic victories, attributing some of the losses to the recent government shutdown and his low visibility in relevant polls.
In a breakfast meeting with congressional Republicans, Trump noted, “We weren’t expected to win last night’s election,” but suggested they gained valuable insights from the experience. He reiterated, “If you read the polling agencies, I think the government shutdown was a big factor.”
