Trump Critiques Democrats Amid Government Shutdown
President Donald Trump criticized Democrats for prolonging the government shutdown in a recent interview, promising to permanently end what he described as their “welfare programs.”
In a discussion on “Sunday Morning Futures,” Trump stated, “Democrats are now kamikaze pilots. They’re not making any progress. They have no future.” He expressed concerns about the lack of solid leadership and viable candidates within the Democratic Party.
Trump sees the current deadlock as a chance for Republicans to leverage their position and remove programs they’ve aimed to cut for years.
He mentioned, “They didn’t understand that it gave me the right to cut programs that Republicans didn’t want: freebies and welfare programs. And we’re cutting them off forever.” The administration contends that they have the authority to pause or freeze specific federal initiatives during the shutdown.
The impasse, which is now nearing three weeks, arose after Democrats insisted on additional funding for enhanced Affordable Care Act subsidies set to expire in 2025. Consequently, many federal employees have not received their paychecks.
Democrats argue that without action, millions could see increased health insurance premiums when the public offering kicks off in November. Meanwhile, the White House claims that Democrats are requesting substantial funds for Medicaid coverage for undocumented immigrants, an initiative that Trump warns could compromise American healthcare.
Shifting gears, Trump also brought up the New York mayoral race, specifically targeting Democratic candidate Zoran Mamdani, suggesting that New York could soon have a “communist mayor.” Mamdani, who identifies as a democratic socialist, gained significant support from younger voters during the primary.
Trump remarked on Mamdani’s intelligence but doubted his capability, saying, “He’s been interviewed several times and he’s pretty smart, but he doesn’t have what it takes.” He voiced concerns that if Mamdani were to win, New York would find itself in “big trouble.”
Critics have noted Mamdani’s previous comments regarding the NYPD, labeling the police department as “racist” and detrimental to public safety. Recently, he appeared on Fox News and issued an apology to the NYPD, expressing a willingness to cooperate with anyone focused on improving the affordability of life in New York City.
