Trump Lawyers Ask Appeals Court to Remove Fani Willis over Racist Speech

Former President Donald Trump's lawyers have asked a Georgia appeals court to remove Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis from prosecuting Trump and 18 co-defendants for “racial animus.”

Documents to be submitted (Via The Washington Post) refers to a speech Willis gave in January after President Trump's co-defendant Mike Roman alleged that Willis had been romantically involved with fellow prosecutor Nathan Wade and that the two had engaged in improper and unethical financial transactions as part of that relationship — an allegation that turned out to be true.

Willis spoke at a predominantly black church, where he accused the defendants of being racist and used racial language to describe them.

Trump's lawyer Criticized The speech at the time added to Roman's case.

In the new complaint, Trump's lawyers say:

The state's “interpretation” (i.e. that Willis' statements were ambiguous, or that who she was referring to is debatable) is disingenuous at best. Willis's intent was clear: to expose her wrongdoings. defense Symbolism of racism. Willis' strategic use of pronouns was neither innocent nor ambiguous. Willis repeatedly used “they” and “them,” associating these terms with her opponents, “white male Republicans.” … Willis's “[God’s] The primary defendants “in her indictment” were President Trump and the other defendants. Contrary to the state's attempt to prioritize form over substance, “the many other defendants” cannot refer solely to Roman.

“Willis used these words as a sly and calculated reference to President Trump and the other defendants. Willis knew what she was doing and got exactly the reaction she wanted: overwhelming media coverage of her false and nefarious scheme and the defendants being slandered before the nation. Willis calculated this outcome despite her obligation to uphold the presumption of innocence, due process, and a fair trial.”

Willis has flagrantly violated Georgia's Rules of Professional Conduct and her forensic misconduct was deliberate and egregious. Accordingly, Willis must be disqualified.

Fulton County Judge Scott McAfee ruled in March that Willis could continue to work on the case only if Wade resigned.

Wade did so, but Judge McAfee allowed Trump's legal team to appeal the ruling and seek to have Willis removed as well.
