Brookings Institution senior fellow Norm Eisen said Sunday on ABC’s “This Week” that former President Donald Trump is likely to be convicted in the New York business documents trial.
“They’re targeting one angry juror,” Eisen said. “I’m in the courtroom every day, observing trials and writing articles, and especially when Trump moves into court, the Part of their job is to watch people come and go, and so far that hasn’t worked. The prosecutors have been very effective.Once again, I disagree with Tim. They made their case very effectively at the beginning and then presented evidence of a criminal conspiracy to influence the election through David Pecker.”
He added, “If Pecker testified that he was funneling money to individuals to kill negative stories to benefit his campaign, and that they agreed to do that, that’s a violation of the law. And people can be prosecuted for that.” That’s a violation of the law, and if you cover it up with 34 false documents, you’re facing 34 very serious felonies. They treated it as an obstruction case, George. They tried to hammer David Pecker down, but they made a mistake. It’s the same kind of misleading. They showed Pecker a document and the judge said it was misleading.”
Eisen further added: I said to Tim the other day, in the 30-plus years I’ve been in court, I’ve never done anything like this. When we started court on Friday morning, they had Trump’s lawyers apologize. So I think we’re moving toward a conviction and, as I wrote in this week’s New York Times, the possibility of prison time. ”
