President Trump: “We need Greenland”
President Donald Trump expressed to reporters why he believes the U.S. requires Greenland for “national security.” This comes as international attention grows regarding the situation.
In light of this, two high-ranking Canadian officials are reportedly preparing a trip to Greenland, which may lead to the establishment of an embassy there.
Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand and Inuk Governor-General Mary Simon are set to visit Greenland in early February. Simon, who became Canada’s first Indigenous governor-general in 2021, previously held the role of ambassador to Denmark.
This visit aligns with Canada’s plans to open a consulate in Greenland.
Canada’s Response to U.S. Interest in Greenland
According to various reports, Prime Minister Mark Carney had a dialogue with Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen during a meeting in Paris, highlighting that the future of Greenland and Denmark should be decided only by the Danish citizens. Their discussions were part of a broader coalition meeting focused on Ukraine.
Frederiksen acknowledged Carney’s clarity in respecting national sovereignty, emphasizing the shared interest in the Arctic’s security and the importance of collective efforts among NATO allies.
President Trump has recently reiterated his stance on annexing Greenland, framing it as a critical matter of national security. He articulated concerns over the presence of Russian and Chinese ships in the region, suggesting that Greenland’s control is essential to U.S. interests.
U.S. Military and Global Reactions
White House Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Miller stated that there would be no military opposition to U.S. actions regarding Greenland, sparking outrage among global leaders. Canada, along with leaders from several European nations, has defended Greenland’s sovereignty, especially after Trump implied the territory could become the 51st state.
In a joint declaration, leaders from France, Germany, Italy, Poland, Spain, the U.K., and Denmark reiterated that “Greenland belongs to its people,” reinforcing that only they should determine their fate.
The offices of Anand and Simon have yet to provide comments on the matter.
