Trump ‘looks forward’ to attending GOP convention despite assassination attempt

Following former President Trump’s injury in an assassination attempt at a rally in Pennsylvania, his campaign and Republican National Committee officials jointly announced that Trump plans to travel to Milwaukee this week to attend the Republican National Convention.

Trump was visibly bleeding from near his right earlobe after gunshots were heard early Saturday at the Butler Farm Show, about an hour north of Pittsburgh. Fox News sources said the incident is being investigated as an assassination attempt.

“As communicated earlier this evening, President Trump is in good spirits and appreciates the swift action of law enforcement and emergency responders,” Trump, campaign officials and Republican National Committee officials said in a joint statement late Saturday.

“President Trump looks forward to joining you in Milwaukee as we proceed with our convention to nominate him as the 47th President of the United States,” the statement continued. “As our party’s nominee, President Trump will continue to share our vision for Making America Great Again.”

Additionally, the Trump campaign released a transcript in which the former president thanked police and mourned the rally attendees who were reportedly shot and killed in the incident.

“I want to thank the United States Secret Service and all law enforcement for their swift response to the shooting that occurred in Butler, Pennsylvania,” Trump wrote in a message received from his campaign’s 88022 emergency line.

“Most importantly, we would like to express our condolences to the family of the person who died at the rally, and to the family of another person who was seriously injured.”

“I can’t believe something like this could happen in our country. At this point we know nothing about the perpetrator. The perpetrator is already dead,” he continued.

“He was shot above the right ear,” Trump said.

“I knew right away something was wrong as I heard the whoosh and the gunshot and felt the bullets going through my skin,” Trump wrote. “I was bleeding profusely and that’s when I realized what was happening.”

He ended his message in capital letters: “GOD BLESS AMERICA.”

President Trump’s eldest daughter Ivanka also responded to the shooting, posting that she thanked the Secret Service for “swift and decisive action” taken against X.

“I will continue to pray for my country. I love you now and always will, Dad,” she said.

“He will never stop fighting to save America,” her brother Donald Jr. responded, in a tweet that also included an image of Trump pumping his fist.
