OMB Announces Military and Law Enforcement Payments Amid Ongoing Shutdown
The White House Office of Management and Budget (OMB) shared on Tuesday that the Trump administration intends to continue funding for military and law enforcement, while also pushing for further cuts to the federal bureaucracy as the ongoing Democratic shutdown progresses.
“OMB is making every effort to enhance security and withstand the Democratic Party’s firm position. We will ensure military and law enforcement get paid, and we’ll carry out reductions in force (RIF) as we wait,” stated OMB in a message.
According to some reports, the Trump administration is focused on maintaining payment to military and law enforcement personnel while also implementing RIF, which may help navigate through what could be one of the longest Democratic shutdowns in U.S. history.
Usually, in a government shutdown, federal workers are placed on furlough and do not receive salaries. However, in this case, the Trump administration is initiating a RIF to avoid being trapped in the federal impasse.
Initial indications suggest that approximately 4,600 RIFs have already been issued swiftly across a range of major federal agencies, such as the Departments of Commerce, Education, Energy, Health and Human Services, Housing and Urban Development, Homeland Security, and Treasury.
“The President has, via OMB, decided that government agencies need to enhance operational efficiency and has instructed the agency to look into ways to optimize staffing in light of ongoing funding lapses,” the Justice Department communicated in legal documents.
“The RIF figures submitted to the court merely reflect a moment in time. More RIFs are anticipated to come,” an OMB spokesperson mentioned.
“Democrats have chosen to shut down the government because they prioritize free healthcare for illegal immigrants over American citizens,” noted White House Press Secretary Abigail Jackson.
Jackson further remarked, “Chuck Schumer might believe that every day of shutdown is beneficial for the radical left, but the American public sees it differently. President Trump is diligently working to mitigate the distress caused by Democrats by seeking solutions to fund military payments and other essential services that cannot be overlooked.”
