President Trump humorously suggested that the U.S. might follow suit and call football “soccer,” like many other countries do.
This comment came during an interview at the FIFA Club World Cup Final on Sunday, as reported.
Trump attended the event at MetLife Stadium, where Chelsea FC triumphed over Paris Saint-Germain FC. He seemed a bit disappointed, though reporters’ lighthearted suggestion about an executive order to officially change the name of the sport in the U.S. brightened his mood.
“I think we can do that,” he remarked.
The president expressed his enthusiasm for U.S. soccer and hopes to see the nation compete at a higher level globally.
“[The U.S.] has been doing well in various areas, politically and economically. I recently visited Saudi Arabia and Qatar, and things are looking pretty hot there. The nation was struggling under an ineffective government, but now there’s a different dynamic,” he reflected, adding, “I believe soccer will gain traction here too.”
Trump was greeted warmly at the FIFA Club World Cup final.
“President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump received a spirited welcome at MetLife Stadium, with applause resonating throughout the venue,” said a report, noting the crowd’s enthusiasm for Trump.
“He traveled from his golf club in Bedminster to watch the game between Chelsea and PSG. Additionally, it was noted that MetLife Stadium will host the Men’s 2026 FIFA World Cup Final, the first time the U.S. has held such an event in about three decades.”
