Drop in Homicides in Washington, D.C. for January 2026
Washington, D.C. experienced a notable decline in homicides in January 2026 compared to the previous year. This shift is attributed to the actions taken by President Trump who established the D.C. Safe and Beautiful Task Force and intensified law enforcement efforts.
According to a recent report, only one murder occurred in the capital from January 1 to January 27, 2026. This is a significant change; last year, there were nine homicides recorded by this time.
In fact, there was a reduction of over 80% in homicides when comparing January 2026 to January 2025. Official statistics indicate that by February 2, 2026, three murders had been reported, showing a substantial drop of 73% from 11 murders in the same timeframe in 2025.
White House Press Secretary Taylor Rogers emphasized that President Trump’s commitment to making D.C. a safer city is paying off. She noted, “Thanks to President Trump’s successful federal law enforcement operations, crime and homicide have decreased dramatically in our nation’s capital.”
Rogers also suggested that cities struggling with crime, like Chicago, could benefit from Trump’s approach.
In March 2025, Trump initiated the D.C. Safe and Beautiful Task Force aimed at bolstering law enforcement in public areas and strictly enforcing laws related to quality of life, such as drug use and vandalism. The task force was additionally charged with enhancing immigration enforcement to target dangerous illegal aliens.
Moreover, in August 2025, Trump announced a federal takeover of the D.C. Metropolitan Police Department, which included a strengthened presence of the National Guard in the city, a practice that continues into 2026.
This federal approach yielded quick results. Reports highlighted an 83% decrease in car robberies and a 50% reduction in homicides within the first 11 days after the police federalization compared to the preceding period.
Overall, violent crime in 2025 saw a 29% reduction from 2024. Specific categories such as robbery, auto theft, and larceny also showed significant declines throughout the year.
Comparing January 1 to February 2 in 2026 with the same period in 2025, statistics showed decreases in various crime types: sexual abuse crimes were down 57%, robberies fell by 56%, and violent crimes dropped by 37%. Auto thefts decreased by 57%, thefts by 10%, and arson incidents dropped entirely.
