Trump to Meet Edan Alexander Two Years After Hamas Attack
President Donald Trump is set to meet Edan Alexander on Tuesday. This meeting comes exactly two years following the Hamas attack on Israel. Alexander, who was released from captivity in May, is a 21-year-old American-Israeli soldier. He spent nearly 600 days as a hostage after being taken by Hamas during the initial assault. Remarkably, he’s the second person named Alexander to visit the White House after being captured, having previously been there in July.
Growing up in Tenafly, New Jersey, Alexander left for Israel at 18 to volunteer for the Israeli Defense Forces. While there, he lived with his grandparents in Tel Aviv before his hostage ordeal began.
Reviving the Trump Peace Plan
As Trump’s administration focuses on a 20-point plan aimed at resolving ongoing conflict, it has also emphasized the importance of retrieving the remaining 48 hostages. The proposal calls for Hamas to release all hostages within 72 hours of the agreement, and for Israeli forces to withdraw troops and fully disarm Hamas.
In an effort to bring justice for those affected by the October 7 attacks, Trump’s Justice Department implemented measures against Hamas and created a new task force in March. Attorney General Pam Bondy reported that, tragically, around 1,200 individuals, including 47 Americans, were killed during those attacks. Additionally, over 250 hostages were taken, with eight being U.S. citizens.
The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) represent the national military of Israel, while Hamas governs Gaza.
Preparedness for the Trump Plan
As preparations continue, the Israeli military is reportedly ready for the first phase of Trump’s plan regarding the release of hostages.
Meanwhile, lawmakers on Capitol Hill are raising concerns. They note that anti-Semitic incidents have grown alarmingly prevalent in the U.S. since the conflict escalated. Records indicate over 9,000 cases of anti-Semitic harassment, vandalism, and assault in 2024 alone, marking a 5% increase from the previous year and a staggering 344% rise over five years.
“The horrific attacks from October 7 were not just assaults on innocent Israelis, many of whom were American citizens, but a stark reminder of the threats we face domestically,” remarked Gerbarino, addressing the rise in anti-Semitic violence.
Trump’s Perspective on Hostages
Addressing the ongoing crisis, Trump commented on what is required to secure the return of Israeli hostages, stating that Hamas must act decisively.
In reflecting on the two years since the tragedy, a notable increase in terrorist acts and anti-Semitic violence has become evident, affecting Jewish Americans profoundly with threats tied to their identity. This situation, as described, is unacceptable, and those who excuse such violence are complicit, according to some lawmakers.
Additionally, Trump recently met with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney amidst trade negotiations between the two nations.
