Trump meets with new NYC mayor Mamdani in the Oval Office for their first encounter

Trump Meets with Mayor-Elect Mamdani

President Donald Trump welcomed New York Mayor-elect Zoran Mamdani to the Oval Office on Friday. This was their first encounter since Mamdani’s election, and notably, the administration has referred to him as a “communist.” Their meeting seemed to reveal some common ground.

During a brief statement to the press, Trump expressed shared goals with Mamdani, emphasizing the desire to improve New York City. “We all have one thing in common,” Trump remarked. “We want this city that we love to do well. I wanted to congratulate him on an incredible campaign—he outsmarted very tough opponents during the primaries.” They discussed various important issues like housing and the rising cost of living.

They met in the White House on Thursday afternoon and then addressed reporters together. Trump expressed optimism about Mamdani being a “great mayor” and noted that he would lend his support from the White House.

Discussion Highlights

“I think he’d be a really fantastic mayor,” Trump added, hinting at nonpartisan collaboration. “So, there’s really no difference between parties here. We’re going to support him and work toward making New York strong and safe.” A bit cautiously, he acknowledged their differing views, stating, “His ideas may not align perfectly with mine, but who knows? Things can always change.” He reflected on how his own perspectives have evolved since his first term.

Mamdani expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to meet and noted that their discussions revolved around improving the city’s well-being amidst rising costs. “It’s important to focus on our shared goal of serving New Yorkers, rather than getting bogged down by our differences,” he said, highlighting the urgent need to alleviate the cost-of-living crisis affecting millions.

Responses to Questions

During a question-and-answer segment, a reporter pointedly asked Mamdani about previous descriptions of Trump as a “fascist.” Trump, quick to interject, suggested it was simpler for Mamdani to agree than to elaborate. “Just say yes,” Trump said. Mamdani hesitated but finally acknowledged the question without fully committing.

Trump went on to commend Mamdani as a “reasonable individual” capable of enhancing safety and reducing costs for residents. “I met someone who’s genuinely invested in making New York great again,” Trump noted, reflecting on the city’s challenges over the years.

Mamdani, who has faced accusations regarding his views on anti-Semitism, stressed his commitment to protecting New York’s Jewish community. “I deeply care about their safety and look forward to combating anti-Semitism across the boroughs,” he stated.

The mayor-elect recently triumphed in the November 4 election and is set to take office on January 1.
