Trump Might Be Verified on Birthright Citizenship

During an appearance on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” on Thursday, Chuck Rosenberg, a former U.S. attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia, suggested that the ongoing debate about President Donald Trump’s citizenship stance could actually yield interesting results.

On the same day, the Supreme Court engaged in oral arguments regarding Trump’s executive order from earlier this year.

Rosenberg discussed the long-established legal precedents and noted that they might be subject to change.

He referenced a significant case from 1898, saying, “When the Supreme Court took up the lawsuit in United States v. Wong Kim Ark. This individual was the child of Chinese permanent residents. The Supreme Court concluded that under the 14th Amendment, which had been established just 30 years prior in 1868, he fell under U.S. jurisdiction because of his birthplace. This precedent has guided our understanding since then.”

He added, “Could it change? Yes, it could. Perhaps President Trump could be proven correct. That could happen. Yet, it’s certainly the perspective of a minority.”
