Former President Trump criticized Harris' recent decline in approval ratings and mused about a possible “Biden comeback,” suggesting Democrats may soon seek a replacement for Harris as party leader.
“Comrade Kamala Harris goes to a far-left, Trump-hating spice shop where from what I've heard the products are awful and overpriced – and calls for 'unity'. Her approval ratings are starting to plummet as people are realizing she's a Marxist and far more liberal than crazy Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth 'Pocahontas' Warren,” Trump said in a Truth Social post on Monday.
“Who are we going to put in charge next? How about Biden come back?” Trump continued.
A new New York Times/Siena College poll put Harris ahead of Trump by one point, within the poll's margin of error, and election forecaster Nate Silver has also adjusted his projections to give Trump a 64.4 percent chance of winning.
The new election results will deal a minor blow to the momentum that has been building since Harris replaced Biden as the party's nominee.
Harris' overall approval rating in the polls remains strong, with her leading Trump nationally by 3.2 points, 49.4 percent to 46.2 percent, according to a Decision Desk HQ/The Hill national polling average.
The effort to portray Harris as an extreme, liberal candidate comes ahead of Tuesday's debate, when the two candidates are set to face off in one of the most tense moments of the campaign so far.
Harris has taken more centrist stances on several issues, including a recent capital gains tax proposal, and is targeting moderate swing votes in key battleground states.
The Hill has reached out to the Harris campaign for response.
