Trump, Musk's latest moves to shrink the federal workforce explained

President Trump and right-hand man Elon Musk have launched a series of moves to cull the federal workforce, advancing many ways to fire employees who have already raised legal challenges.

Latest Action When the Trump administration shut down its government takeover program, the offer was warned that “a large portion of federal agencies are likely to be reduced through restructuring, restructuring and power reductions.”

The agency is now seeing in real time thousands of people already let go and move forward with additional plans to launch employees.

“People voted for a massive government reform, and that's what people are trying to get,” Musk told an oval office meeting with Trump this week.

The Trump administration has turned to three different tools to reduce the workforce.

Trial version shooting

Personnel Management Bureau (OPM) On Thursday, government-wide agencies directed government officials to terminate still on probation.

This is a group that includes people hired last year or two years, depending on the agency, with as many as 200,000 employees.

The move began with probation employees hired by the OPM itself. They've been sneaking up ever since.

On Friday, the Home Office fired 2,300 employees, the Veterans Affairs Bureau expected to fire 1,000 people, and Health and Welfare Services expected to fire 5,200 people. Similarly, other institutions I telegraphed them end.

Employees on probation are easier to remove than employees with longer federal services, but there are still some protections.

The Employee Union and the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) have questioned the legality of the move.

The ACLU argues that the law requires each employee to consider performance on a case-by-case basis, but that massive shootings must follow existing laws to reduce the workforce. It is claiming. Employees must still be informed of “inadequate” in their performance before being fired, the organization said.

The U.S. Government Employee League “caused politically driven mass shootings and targeted employees not for performance but for being hired before Trump took office.”

OPM equated probation with a phase in the recruitment process.

“The probation period is not a permanent employment qualification, but a continuation of the job search process. An OPM spokesman said in a statement that the agency has taken independent action in light of the recent hiring freezes and has put the federal government into action. It supports broader efforts to better serve Americans with higher standards to restructure and streamline.

A's command 'Reducing power'

Trump signed an executive order Tuesday night, directing all agencies to prepare a RIF (RIF), clearing the path to “large” layoffs within the government.

a White House Fact Sheet The order is described as part of our commitment to “reduce the size and scope of the federal government.”

“This order launches critical transformation of federal officials.” A state focused on “eliminating waste, bloating, and isolating.”

The order can lay the foundation for layoffs to develop a reorganization plan for government agencies for 30 days.

From there, the agent must give employees at least 60 days of notice. The government weighs a variety of factors, including job performance and veteran status, when deciding who to lay off.

The order also aims to reduce the size of the workforce through attrition and aims to instruct the agency to “employ no more than one employee for four employees leaving federal services.” It's there.

There is a Trump order Already spurred the lawsuit From the union that claimed this It does not take into account the usual reasons for ignition of reduced force.

“This order will not be directed to the agency to promptly engage with the RIF for the specified permitted reasons, not for the specified acceptable reasons, but for the purposes of “eliminating waste, bloating, and isolating.” I will instruct you,” they write.

“Instructs agents to prioritize essential employees during expenditure lapses, not factors such as tenure or performance.”

The union earlier this week also denounced the plan.

“Firing a huge number of federal employees does not reduce the need for government services. It is important to those everyday Americans, veterans and seniors who rely on them. It just makes service more difficult or impossible.”

“Americans want the government to work when they need it. These reckless and unfair cuts have been a massive tax cut on masks and Trump's billionaire companions, as well as the rest of us. Only two things about the broken government will achieve.”

The buyout program is over

This week marks the sudden termination of federal acquisition programs, which were offered Wednesday night, after a court order paved the way for the government to close the window with the first proposed offer with a February 6 approval deadline. I saw it.

Approximately 75,000 federal workers have signed contracts to provide eight months of pay and benefits to employees who are willing to resign from government services.

At about 4% of the federal workforce, this figure didn't reach the 5% to 10% forecast first raised by the White House.

Similarly, the union warned against accepting the acquisition.

While many of the contract terms were inconsistent with each other, the end of government funding in March brought legal and logistical challenges, including raising doubts about whether the Trump administration would do good things in the deal. I've raised it.

Anyway, the closure of the offer allowed the Trump administration to move forward with other plans, such as pushing with probation employees, causing a cut in power.

“No, look, that's 75,000 more people than we had,” Trump said Friday.

“No, 75,000 people are a lot of people. And we paid them a lot. You know, if you call it, we gave them a lot of retirement benefits. But , no, I think you probably have a little more. It's a big and incredible savings. We want to reduce the government, but we want to improve it. We'll do it better. But it's downsized.”
