President Trump made the announcement on Truth Social on Saturday.
Patel first gained support from President Trump in 2017 as a staffer on former Rep. Devin Nunes (R-Calif.) on the House Intelligence Committee.
Patel also served on the Trump administration's White House National Security Council, briefly served as an advisor to the acting director of national intelligence, and served as chief of staff to Defense Secretary Chris Miller at the end of the president-elect's term.
Last year, Mr Patel published a memoir in which he called for the replacement of “anti-democrats”
Civil servants and “patriots” in law enforcement and intelligence agencies.
President Trump went on to praise the book, saying, “We will use this blueprint to take back the White House and rid the entire government of gangsters!”
Patel must be approved by the Senate to be confirmed as FBI director.
