President Donald Trump has appointed national security adviser Mike Waltz as U.S. ambassador to the United Nations.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio, during that time, will take on the responsibility of national security adviser, and will also be led by the State Department. Trump announced his shakeup Thursday afternoon in a true social post.
“We are pleased to announce that we will nominate Mike Waltz as the next U.S. ambassador for the United Nations,” Trump wrote.
“From the days of uniformed on the battlefield, in Congress and as my national security adviser, Mike Waltz worked hard to put our country's interests first. He would do the same in his new role,” he added.
Waltz has been nominated for the role that Trump first tapped House Republican leader Speaker Elise Stefanik (R-NY). Trump took Stefanik's nomination in late March to protect the majority of the vulnerable home GOPs.
“Interim, Secretary of State Marco Rubio will serve as national security adviser while continuing his strong leadership in the State Department,” Trump added. “Together, we will continue to fight tirelessly to make America again.”
Waltz issued a statement in a post on X.
“We are deeply honored to continue our service to President Trump and our great nation,” he wrote.
Trump's afternoon announcement follows a morning report, followed by reports that Waltz and his deputy, Alex Wong, had left their roles.
Waltz must go through a Senate confirmation to become an ambassador.
Left Atlantic editor Jeffrey Goldberg surrounded the waltz in March after he created a signal group chat among senior cabinet officials about the accidental addition of Hautisthrikes.
Democrats could seize “SignalGate” during the waltz verification process.
