Trump and UK Prime Minister Discuss Palestinian State Recognition
During a joint press conference, President Trump highlighted a rare point of disagreement between himself and British Prime Minister Kiel Starmer regarding the recognition of a Palestinian state.
When asked about his priorities concerning the Palestinian state and ways to cease conflict in Israel, Trump expressed his strong desire for Hamas to release all hostages. He avoided commenting on the criticism surrounding Israeli military actions in Gaza.
“We want to finish it. We must get the hostages back soon. That’s what the Israelis want,” Trump stated. “They want to get them back. And we want them to stop the fighting.”
“I have a disagreement with the Prime Minister on that score,” he remarked. “In fact, one of our few disagreements.”
Following Trump’s two-day visit to the UK, the UK government is anticipated to vote on recognizing the Palestinian state. Starmer mentioned that the timing of this decision had “nothing to do” with Trump’s visit.
The Prime Minister also noted that he and Trump had a lengthy discussion, lasting about an hour, on global affairs which included the situation in the Middle East.
Starmer expressed hope that recognizing the Palestinian state could lead to a secure outcome for Israel and establish the framework for a viable Palestinian state.
Conflict between Israel and Hamas has been ongoing since October 7, 2023, triggered by attacks that resulted in the deaths of over 1,200 Israelis. The subsequent military actions in Gaza have claimed tens of thousands of lives, contributing to a grave humanitarian crisis in the region.
Trump has maintained strong support for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and has generally refrained from public criticism of Israeli actions, despite some personal grievances.
Occasionally, Trump has mentioned the necessity for increased aid in Gaza, but he has also proposed relocating the population while the U.S. would manage the land for rebuilding efforts. Moreover, he has cautioned allies against recognizing the Palestinian state too swiftly.
