Trump Pushes Gasoline Retailers to Lower Prices
President Donald Trump has once again called on gas companies to reduce their prices, emphasizing that they should align with the recent drop in oil costs amid ongoing tensions with Iran.
“Gasoline Retailers must get their Prices down, IMMEDIATELY! They’re too high considering that Oil is now at $68 a Barrel, and heading south,” Trump stated on Truth Social. “The Retailers must quickly react to this statement, and so what they know is right — DROP YOUR PRICE FOR OUR GREAT AMERICAN PEOPLE!”
He reinforced his view that price gouging is “totally illegal” and unacceptable, warning that failure to comply could lead to significant consequences.
Last week, Trump asked the Department of Justice to investigate potential price gouging at gas stations following his memorandum that helped reduce West Texas Intermediate oil prices from a peak of about $112 per barrel in April to about $70 per barrel.
As reported by AAA, the nationwide average price for gas was approximately $3.85 as of Tuesday, with Hawaii having the highest prices at around $5.47 per gallon and Indiana recording the lowest at $3.18 per gallon.
Despite the drop from about $4.36 a month earlier, Trump argued that prices remain too high—particularly in California, where increased taxes have exacerbated costs.
“Start targeting around the $2.50 a Gallon number, and California should stop charging such heavy taxes on their gasoline,” he remarked. “Soon the tax will be higher than the product itself, and the United States will not stand for it, nor will the People of California, who are being abused by these ridiculous taxes and by their own government.”
Effective Wednesday, California’s gasoline excise tax will rise from 61.2 cents to 63.4 cents per gallon, maintaining its position as the state with the highest gasoline tax in the country, closely followed by Pennsylvania at 57.6 cents per gallon.
