Trump on Platner: 'It's curious that when a Republican woman made the same accusation, no one took her seriously'

Trump Comments on Graham Platner’s Controversy

President Donald Trump recently addressed the ongoing situation surrounding Maine Senate candidate Graham Platner. At a press briefing on Air Force One, he was asked if he thought Platner should step back from the Senate race, given the serious allegations against him from two women, one of whom accused him of rape.

Platner has denied all accusations.

“The real question is whether we believe the woman’s story,” Trump stated. “There are a lot of people who tell big lies. It’s — he’s in a bind.”

Trump also highlighted what he called double standards in media coverage. He noted it was “interesting” to see mainstream outlets now interested in the story, contrasting it with how claims made by Republican Lindsay Fifield about Platner were largely ignored due to her political ties.

“Can they do it? [force him out] Well, he’s going to lose,” the president remarked. “What’s so interesting is that when a Republican woman came forward with the same charges, no one believed her. When this woman came out, everyone believed her.”

Lindsay Fifield, a conservative author, had dated Platner from 2013 to 2015. An article mentioned that her ex-boyfriend exhibited erratic behavior, including instances of removing condoms without consent. This didn’t garner much national attention until Jenny Racicot, a 41-year-old registered Democrat, alleged that Platner assaulted her in 2021.

As of Wednesday evening, Platner publicly withdrew from the Maine Senate race.

In an 11-minute video shared on social media, he said, “I can’t be the one to continue the campaign.”

Despite his withdrawal, Platner continues to deny the allegations, claiming they are false and criticizing the media and political system for acting as “judge, jury, and executioner” without proper investigation.

His decision to step down follows significant pressure and loss of support from both local and national Democratic leaders.
