Trump on why he hasn't endorsed Garvey: 'He hasn't reached out to MAGA'

Former President Trump said Friday that California Republican Senate candidate Steve Garvey has a responsibility to reach out to the former president and his supporters if he wants to gain their support.

“I don't know much about Steve Garvey. I think he made a big mistake by not reaching out to MAGA,” Trump said after his California remarks, when asked why he had not endorsed Garvey.

“I hear he wants MAGA support, but he's got to call me. If he gets MAGA support, he'll win,” Trump added.

Garvey, a Republican, is running for the California Senate seat being vacated by Democrat LaFonza Butler, who was appointed following the death of Sen. Dianne Feinstein. Butler is not seeking a full term.

Garvey will face Rep. Adam Schiff (D-Calif.), who received the most votes in the primary election earlier this year, in November.

Schiff is likely to win in the heavily Democratic state of California. He has long been one of Trump's biggest rivals, led the impeachment effort against the then-president and is the top Democrat on the House Intelligence Committee.

President Trump on Friday called Schiff “one of the most disgusting people.”

A September poll from Emerson College showed Schiff leading Garvey by 22 percentage points, 55 percent to 33 percent.
