Trump opens up lead on Biden after debate: Wall Street Journal poll

Former President Trump has widened his lead over President Biden to six points in a new presidential poll. The Wall Street Journal It took place on Wednesday amid continuing fallout from last week’s debate.

The poll showed Trump with 48% support, compared with Biden’s 42% in head-to-head contests — up from a similar poll in February, when Trump had a 2-point lead.

According to The Wall Street Journal, Trump’s 48% share of the vote is the highest for either candidate at any point in the 2024 presidential election.

Biden’s notably weak performance in Thursday’s debate in Atlanta has raised questions among Democrats about whether the president should continue campaigning, with post-debate polls showing Trump’s support growing.

Eighty percent of respondents, and 76% of Democrats, said Biden is too old to run for reelection at age 81. Two-thirds of respondents said they would like to see another Democratic candidate take Biden’s place in office.

Vice President Harris has publicly supported Biden but has become a primary target of Democrats calling on him to drop out of the presidential race.

Nearly half, 47%, said they would like to see their respective parties replace both Biden and Trump, while 53% said they were not enthusiastic about either candidate.

When third-party candidates were included in the poll, Trump’s lead dropped to 6 percentage points.

The Wall Street Journal poll was conducted June 29-July 2 among about 1,500 registered voters and has a margin of error of 2.5 percentage points.
