Former President Donald Trump offered condolences to firefighter Corey Comperatore, who was killed in an assassination attempt on Trump during a rally in Pennsylvania last weekend.
“Tragically, a shooter took the life of our fellow man, Corey Comperatore, and severely injured two great warriors, David Duch and James Copenhaver. I have spoken with all three families of these fine people, and our love and prayers are with them and always will be,” Trump said.
“Corey was a highly respected former fire chief and was accompanied by his wife, Helen, and their two precious daughters,” he continued. “He gave his life as a selfless human shield to protect them from the incoming bullets. He was a truly honorable man.”
Trump then walked over to a firefighter’s jacket and helmet that Comperatore’s family had sent to the convention, and asked for a moment of silence for his Pennsylvania father, which had been placed next to Trump’s onstage.

“There is no greater love than to give your life for another,” Trump said, noting that Comperatore died trying to shield his family from a bullet. “This is the spirit on which America was built in its darkest hour, and this is the love that will once again lead America to the pinnacle of human achievement and greatness.”
Comperatore, 50, of Thurber, Pennsylvania, was the fire chief for the Buffalo Township Fire Department, and before sending its equipment to Milwaukee for Trump’s onstage appearance, the fire department paid tribute to Trump after his death by hanging his coat and helmet outside the building.
