Trump Pardoning J6 Defendants ‘Creating a Pretext for More Political Violence’

Sen. Cory Booker (D-N.J.) said Tuesday on MSNBC's “All In” that President Donald Trump's pardons for the Jan. 6 protesters “provide an excuse for more political violence in our country.” ” was born.

Host Chis Hayes said, “The President of the United States released a violent criminal. This is not an exaggeration, this is not an editorial. I'm just stating what happened.”

Booker said, “No, it's worse than that, Chris. If you lose because of your methods, let them do something anti-democratic. Because they say they're going to send you in to attack the Capitol, to stop the peaceful transfer of power, to stop the workings of Congress, to have a stun gun put to the neck of a police officer, to have a baton to the head. If you get hit or your spine or skull is crushed, , then don't worry, you are doing it in my name and for my benefit, so forgive me. What he is doing now is more political violence in our country. It's creating an excuse for this, and that's scary.”

He added: “So now is the time to stand up and tell the American people the truth. Donald Trump has so far said that 36 hours is about making life easier, lowering prices, making things more affordable, making things safer. He hasn't fulfilled his promise to do so. He is clearly pursuing the goal of furthering political retribution. Pardoning these people will only erode democratic norms, just as he did during his first term. Instead, it has created conditions that make our democracy less secure in many ways.”
