Trump places D.C. police under federal control, describes capital crime as 'embarrassing'

Trump Discusses Crime in D.C. Ahead of Putin Meeting

President Donald Trump characterized the rising crime in Washington, D.C., as “embarrassing” while gearing up for a crucial meeting with foreign leaders, notably a much-anticipated meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin scheduled for Friday.

“This is an emergency,” Trump told reporters during a press conference on Monday. He emphasized the need for federal intervention to assist D.C. police in tackling crime. “It’s tragic, truly, and frankly, embarrassing to be here.”

He mentioned, “I’m heading to Russia on Friday for the meeting with Putin. I prefer not to dwell on how once beautiful this capital was—now it’s, well, there’s graffiti everywhere.”

Trump, set to meet with Putin in Alaska, highlighted the strategic importance of the location between D.C. and Moscow.

He declared a state of criminal emergency on Monday, mobilizing the National Guard and various law enforcement agencies to curb the surge in crime.

In a pointed remark, Trump described D.C.’s situation: “Our capital is overrun with violent gangs and ruthless criminals. This has to stop. We won’t tolerate it.”

Crime rates in D.C. surged during the pandemic, reflecting a broader rise in violent incidents across the country back in 2020 amid social justice protests. Subsequently, the homicide rates and other violent crime statistics have fluctuated, showing a decrease in recent times.

Returning to the current climate, he noted several high-profile incidents in D.C. recently, including tragic shootings involving innocent victims.

Local Democratic leaders reacted critically to Trump’s announcement, arguing that his call to federate police is unnecessary. Attorney General Brian Schwarb pointed out that violent crime rates have actually dropped by 26% this year, questioning the need for a federal response.

Trump’s press conference occurs just days before his meeting with Putin, likely to touch upon the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine.

“I think we can have a productive discussion,” Trump said, hinting at the importance of his upcoming conversations with European leaders following his meeting with Putin. He expressed confidence in his relationships with them, indicating he’d be ready to facilitate dialogue between Ukrainian President Zelensky and Putin if necessary.

Trump conveyed his belief that they’ll quickly ascertain the sincerity of Putin’s proposals, stating, “We’ll know within minutes if a deal is possible. Likely, there will be discussions on land exchanges too.”

When pressed on how he could make such predictions, he simply stated, “That’s my job. I will make a deal,” before moving on to the next question.
