Trump Plans to Impose Tariffs on Pharmaceuticals Soon

Trump Announces Tariffs on Drugs

President Trump revealed on Tuesday his plan to impose tariffs on pharmaceutical products. This move, as he explained in an interview with CNBC, aims to shift drug production back to the United States.

During the discussion, CNBC’s Becky Quick pointed out that the US has a significant trade deficit of $41 billion with Switzerland, noting that drugs are a considerable issue there.

Trump remarked, “They’re making a fortune along with the drugs, and our medicines are being produced in places like China and Ireland.” He mentioned that the tariffs are expected to take effect “next week or so.”

Initially, he suggested implementing small tariffs on drugs that would escalate significantly over time, reaching 150% in a year and eventually hitting 250%. The goal, he emphasized, is to manufacture these products domestically.

In addition to drugs, Trump also indicated that tariffs on semiconductors are on the table. He expressed a strong desire for manufacturing to occur in the US, specifically highlighting the investment by the Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company in Arizona.

This announcement about drug tariffs follows a recent press conference in Allentown, Pennsylvania, where Trump discussed potential drops in drug prices. He asserted that there could be a substantial decrease in prices—stating figures that, while perhaps a bit exaggerated, underscored his commitment to this initiative.

Trump elaborated on wanting US drug prices to align with those in Europe and critiqued the historical pricing disparities that have existed for over 25 years. He also referred to a letter he recently sent to various pharmaceutical companies, pushing for price reductions.

He concluded by suggesting that if companies don’t align with his push for lower prices, it may significantly impact the political landscape ahead of elections.
