WASHINGTON – President Trump isn’t planning to take any further action against Iran following the recent strike on a US base in Qatar that didn’t go as expected.
A Pentagon source mentioned that as things currently stand, Trump won’t retaliate for what they’re calling a “failed retaliation.” They seem to believe that tensions in the Middle East might ease up after the US targeted three Iranian nuclear sites a couple of days ago.
Administration officials and those close to the presidency have confirmed this stance. Some claim that Trump generally prefers to guide military decisions when it comes to Iran.
Iran launched 14 missiles at Al Udeid Air Force Base, which is located southwest of Doha. Thirteen of those missiles were intercepted, as Trump announced on True Society Monday afternoon.
Trump noted that the remaining missile was “freed because it was heading in a harmless direction.” There are military experts saying that Iran’s missile launch seemed to be well-coordinated, and Qatar’s involvement might have been a way to maintain some credibility in the situation.
Meanwhile, reports indicate that Iran also targeted Al-Assad Air Base in western Iraq, but this coincided with an earlier attempt to avoid American casualties after General Qasem Soleimani’s assassination.
US forces, involved in operations against Iran’s nuclear program, recently dropped 14 “bunker-buster” bombs on the Fordow enrichment facility and executed strikes with 30 Tomahawk missiles at the Natanz and Isfahan nuclear sites on Saturday night.
Despite the chaos, Trump, now 78, mentioned in his post-attack communications that he wishes to minimize hostilities following the shooting down of missiles over Qatar.
However, Trump’s comments throughout the conflict appeared somewhat misleading, hinting that a strike wasn’t on the horizon. This followed Israel’s initial strike on June 13, which seemed to suggest there would be a delay in deciding on a US bombing mission.
“We’re pleased to report there were no American injuries,” he said. “Most importantly, they were well-prepared. Hopefully, this will lessen the animosity. I appreciate the early warning we received.”
