Wives of Wrongfully Detained Americans in China Seek Help Ahead of Trump-Xi Meeting

The spouses of two Americans unjustly imprisoned in China are urging for their husbands’ release as President Trump prepares to meet with Chinese leader Xi Jinping. Gillian Turner highlights the emotional challenges faced by families, particularly focusing on Youlin Chen and Min Zin, and their hopes for diplomatic progress during the upcoming talks.

In an interview with Fox News, Yongang Rong, the wife of Dr. Youlin Chen, shared that Trump intends to appeal to Xi for her husband’s release. Chen, a researcher specializing in seismic and nuclear studies, was taken by Chinese officials in November 2024. His detention has raised widespread concern, primarily because he is among the only two U.S. citizens in China currently classified by the State Department as wrongfully detained.

“My husband is an American citizen. He is the father of my son and we terribly miss him,” Rong expressed during her discussion with Turner.

Reports indicate that following his abduction, Chinese agents confiscated Chen’s electronic devices and repeatedly accessed his email accounts, which is quite alarming. Rong suspects his detention is linked to his research on nuclear monitoring.

“It’s his research work. He has been doing a lot of research on how to monitor nuclear tests,” she explained.

Dr. Chen’s studies reportedly involve using earthquake data to analyze the Earth’s crustal structures in Asia and have included methods to detect North Korean nuclear activities.

Meanwhile, Sylvia Zin, the wife of Min Zin, expressed confusion over her husband’s detention. He specializes in research related to military governance and Chinese-Myanmar relations but, unlike Chen, Zin doesn’t understand the rationale behind his captivity.

“I really have no idea why his research would attract their attention. He is an open-source researcher, with all of his work published online,” Zin lamented.

Both women are reaching out to Trump for assistance. Zin stated, “At this point, I think the president is the only person who can move ahead in this case and bring him home.” She, along with Rong, voiced cautious optimism that Trump’s involvement could lead to a resolution.

“President Trump has done a lot for us. He has personally been involved in this case. I know whenever he personally intervenes, Americans come home,” Rong remarked, reflecting a hint of hope amid their distress.

In recent times, the Trump administration has reportedly aided in the release of 83 U.S. citizens detained abroad, which adds a layer of encouragement for both women. As the meeting between Trump and Xi approaches, the families remain anxious yet hopeful for a favorable outcome in their husbands’ cases.
