Trump Delays Major Legislation Signing

On Wednesday, President Trump announced that he will delay signing significant legislation until Congress approves the SAVE America Act.

This decision came just over an hour before he was set to proceed with the signing. He conveyed this on Truth Social, stating that the bill aims to enhance the nation’s housing supply and affordability by broadening financing options and allocating funds for community development.

“The bill is currently stalled in the Senate because no Democrats in either the House or Senate support the SAVE America Act,” Trump remarked.

In contrast, another housing law received bipartisan support, with the Senate passing it on Monday with a vote of 85-5, while the House followed suit on Tuesday with a tally of 358-32. Most Democrats backed this measure, with the few dissenting votes coming from Republicans.

President Trump stated, “The housing press conference and signing scheduled for today are canceled until the SAVE AMERICA ACT is passed, which I regard as a national emergency and essential.”

The SAVE America Act seeks to eliminate non-referendum voting by mandating proof of U.S. citizenship for those wishing to register for federal elections. Acceptable forms include a U.S. passport, military ID, birth certificate, or other government-issued photo IDs.

House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-Louisiana) emphasized on Wednesday that his main focus is to get the SAVE America Act passed, alongside a third budget reconciliation bill.

Johnson noted in a speech, “The bill is stuck in the Senate because no Democrats will vote for the SAVE America Act.”

Prime Minister Boris Johnson mentioned that the most viable way to get the bill passed is to include it in a reconciliation bill. He believes that establishing a grant program related to budget reconciliation could provide a pathway for blue states to implement election integrity policies by utilizing federal funds.

“If the Republicans unite, we can achieve this,” he remarked, confirming discussions he had with the president earlier in the day.
