Trump Supports New Congressional Map in Texas
On Saturday, President Trump reaffirmed his backing for Texas Lt. Col. Dan Patrick (R), championing a congressional map that might allow the GOP to gain up to five seats in the upcoming midterm elections next year.
Trump described Patrick as a “great” lieutenant governor and an “incredible friend” to his “Make America Great Again” initiative. He highlighted Patrick’s role in advancing Texas’s rezoning proposal to completion.
“Dan’s leadership was key in implementing this new, fair, and improved Congressional map, aiming to enable the election of five new MAGA Republicans in the 2026 midterms. This is a significant victory for Texas,” Trump said. “In his next term, Dan will keep fighting alongside us.”
Moreover, he expressed, “Dan Patrick, a true ally of MAGA from the beginning, has my absolute support for re-election. He won’t let you down!”
The Texas Senate passed the district change law early Saturday, after attempts by a group of Democrats to delay the vote were unsuccessful. State Democrats are preparing to push back, even if the maps are sent to the governor.
Governor Greg Abbott (R) announced via social media that he eagerly anticipates signing the new law.
“A big, beautiful map has cleared the Senate. Despite the minor Democratic theatrics, we kept our promise,” he tweeted after the vote. “This map truly reflects the voting preferences of Texans, and I’m excited to sign it.”
In another post, Abbott remarked, “Redrawing the council lines is merely the beginning. The underlying issue changing elections across the U.S. is that far-left policies from Democrats are causing more Americans to switch to the Republican side.”
The bill was advanced in the Capitol on Wednesday after Democrats, who previously fled the state to postpone the vote, returned and allowed it to proceed.
Trump described the advancement as a “big victory” leading into 2026, noting that Texas has always been reliable.
This redrawing of congressional lines has garnered national attention, prompting several states, including California, Illinois, New York, Indiana, and Missouri, to consider similar changes. California Governor Gavin Newsom (D) signed a bill earlier this week that could mitigate the additional seats Republicans might gain due to the new Texas map.
In an early August interview, Patrick defended the GOP’s push for more Congressional seats, asserting that Texas, a red state, deserves representation in line with its voting patterns. He also criticized Democrats for abandoning their posts to avoid voting.
“I challenge them: return and do what’s right. They’ve disconnected from the voters, so there’s no need to hide,” Patrick told Fox News’ Sean Hannity. “The real issue isn’t about redistricting; it’s that they’re losing the support of their voters, who are increasingly leaning Republican.”
