President Donald Trump expressed his continued support for Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem on Friday, describing her as having done a “great job” amidst ongoing immigration-related protests across the U.S.
In a lengthy message on Truth Social, Trump accused “radical left” activists of targeting Noem. He pointed to significant improvements in border security during his administration. “These radical left lunatics are attacking Secretary Noem because she’s a woman and because she’s performed so well!” he wrote. He also noted the progress in reducing violent crime, claiming the murder rate in America has hit a record low in 125 years.
In another post, Trump commended Border Patrol Agent Tom Homan, who has stepped in for Border Patrol Commander Greg Bovino in Minneapolis, suggesting that Bovino had not effectively managed immigration enforcement in the state.
Amidst this, the White House has rejected allegations about “withdrawal,” explaining that changes in Minnesota leadership will not alter the underlying strategy.
Trump’s remarks come as Noem faces increasing criticism following the tragic shooting of Alex Preti and Renee Good during an immigration operation by federal agents in Minneapolis. Prominent Democrats, including House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, have suggested that Noem should be removed from her position. Even some Republican senators, like Thom Tillis and Lisa Murkowski, have echoed these calls.
On Friday, student groups from the University of Minnesota organized what they termed a “national shutdown” to protest federal immigration enforcement, gathering support from activists nationwide.
Trump accused Democrats of using these protests to divert attention from alleged financial misconduct involving vast sums of public money. He urged Republicans not to let the Democrats distract them and described the protests as a smokescreen for “criminal acts.” He stated: “They should all be behind bars.”
Trump reaffirmed his lack of intention to ask Noem to resign. When asked if she would step down, he bluntly replied “no.”
Noem also addressed the calls for her removal during an interview on “Hannity,” claiming the attacks against her were from “radicals.” She insisted she was simply doing her job: enforcing the law as promised by Trump to protect U.S. citizens.
