Trump Praises New Trade Agreement With the United Kingdom

US President Donald Trump has announced a major trade deal with the UK, aimed at enhancing market access with “one of our closest allies.”

The agreement, described by Trump during a meeting in the Oval Office with Prime Minister Kiel Starmer, reflects a strong alignment on economic security between the two nations.

This announcement coincided with the 80th anniversary of Victory in Europe Day, highlighting a shared historical significance: “we won the war together.”

Through this deal, the UK and US reaffirm their commitment to mutual relations and equitable principles in international trade. The agreement significantly increases market access for American exports, especially in agriculture, granting access to American beef, ethanol, and an array of products from American farmers.

Additionally, the UK will be working to eliminate or reduce various non-tariff barriers that have previously hindered American products, which I think is quite substantial for both nations. It seems beneficial for the UK, which has certain restrictions in place, and we appreciate their openness.

In response, Prime Minister Starmer noted that this agreement not only enhances trade but also safeguards jobs while creating new ones and improving market access. He emphasized the importance of reliable supply chain security, especially concerning finished products sourced from China and raw materials.

Further details indicate that this agreement will facilitate increased export opportunities for British businesses in the US market, including reduced tariffs on cars exported from the UK and zero tariffs on specialized aerospace equipment like Rolls-Royce engines.

Accompanied by Vice President JD Vance and British Ambassador Peter Mandelson, President Trump referred to this deal as a “historical step” toward achieving “economic security integrity.” He expressed confidence, stating, “We feel very comfortable because it’s a great alliance. The two countries are collaborating to ensure that economic security aligns with national security, focusing on a robust industrial base, effective export controls, and protection of key technologies.”

John Carney from Breitbart News interpreted Trump’s assertions, emphasizing that the administration connects economic and national security directly. Establishing safe supply chains across vital sectors such as energy and manufacturing is essential, suggesting that this deal opens the UK to American markets, especially regarding commodities that are critical in relation to competing nations like Russia and China.

Tariffs on steel and aluminum are set to drop to zero, which could lessen the UK’s reliance on Chinese steel.

Trump mentioned that numerous countries have expressed interest in similar agreements, stating, “There are many meetings planned today and tomorrow. All countries want to do business.” Signing this deal first gives the UK a prestigious position, underscoring Trump’s belief that first movers often secure the best opportunities.
