After celebrating Spain’s and Argentina’s thrilling World Cup final match, President Trump briefly interrupted the trophy presentation for Spain, prompting a response from FIFA president Gianni Infantino.
Following La Roja’s narrow 1-0 win against Argentina, President Trump, who was watching the game with members of his administration and various world leaders, stepped onto the field amid some boos from the crowd.
Together with Infantino, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, and others, Trump helped present the awards.
Initially, the match officials received their awards, followed by the recognition of Argentina as the tournament’s runners-up.
The players then donned their medals and exchanged handshakes with Trump. Subsequently, Trump and Infantino awarded Spain the golden trophy, and the team continued to take photos on the podium. However, Trump was seen energetically walking across the stage, fist-pumping in celebration of Spain’s victory.
Eventually, he wandered to the side, seemingly eager to pose with the champions. It was noted that Trump likely took a few pictures of Spain lifting the trophy before Infantino signaled for him to step aside, allowing Spain the moment in the spotlight.
Interestingly, Trump had recently criticized Spain prior to the match, likely due to his ongoing disagreements with Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez about Madrid’s stance during the Iran war.
Earlier this month, Trump remarked to NATO chief Mark Rutte, “Spain is a wasted cause. By the way, we don’t want to do any more trade with Spain. Let’s cut it off. Spain is a terrible NATO partner. We don’t want to do anything. They’re desperate. They’re bad people.”
Sanchez attended the event at MetLife Stadium along with King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia.
Notably, Trump made history as the first serving U.S. president to attend a men’s World Cup final held on U.S. soil.
